Forklift Training

You may have heard about working as a forklift driver but you may have no idea what it is all about. To understand this kind of work, you must first understand what it means to be a forklift driver. In order to do so, read this article for more information.

First of all, what is a forklift? A forklift is a piece of machinery created to move heavy loads of items from one area to another. They are found in construction sites, warehouses and some in manufacturing facilities. Although this job seemed to be as easy as pushing buttons or pulling a lever for it to work, there is more to do than just simply maneuvering forklift machinery.

Of course, a forklift machine needs a driver to make it work. Forklift drivers are also known as industrial truck drivers. These kinds of drivers are almost in demand in every state. They are needed in industries where moving heavy objects are involved. In order to become a forklift driver, there are some qualifications that one must possess in order to become a driver of this equipment. You must enroll in an Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA Forklift Training in order to become a skilled forklift driver.

An individual must be at least 18 years old upon application. Applicants must be a certified forklift operator and must have taken training classes before he is allowed to drive this machinery. A forklift driver must be in good general health to fit the position. An applicant for this position must have no vision, hearing or neurological impairment.

They must not be under medication that can hinder their ability to respond quickly, drive or operate the machine. Other qualification that may be helpful in applying as a forklift driver is to have a high school diploma or a GED. They must also be good drivers, must have a valid driver’s license and must have a good driving history.

This will ensure the applicant that they are old enough to drive and also to know if they have good driving skills. Though there are no weight specifications, some companies may require their applicants to have a physical exam before examinations so as to assure that the potential driver is in good physical condition.

An OSHA Forklift training requirements has four parts: formal, practical, evaluation and certification. A formal training is consists of 1 ½ - 4 hours classroom training that all applicants must complete. A practical training is composed of hands-on skill building on the forklift. This may involve the applicant to drive a forklift machine as part of the practical assessment.

The applicants/students are then evaluated by their trainer and if they have what it takes to pass as a forklift driver, a final test will be given. If they pass the OSHA Forklift Training Test, certification will be given to those who have successfully passed and completed the training. A forklift certificate is valid for 3 years and must be renewed before it expires. This certificate is not allowed to be used in other business or employees.

If the forklift operator needs to switch jobs or is moving to another establishment in another place or state, they must obtain a new forklift license. This is in effect to reduce any occupational hazard within organizations as well as protecting both employer and employee. For a forklift that had an accident or has improperly handled the equipment, a re-certification is needed in order to work or drive forklift machinery again.

Applicants have two options in attaining their certificate. They can both register online and have their online training courses or they can enroll at a certified OSHA training facility for their classes and hands-on training. Although there are some companies who don’t require certification, it is always a good choice to have a ready certificate.

Being a certified forklift driver also means that you have the right skills to do the job and it will also open new opportunities for you in the future. So I do recommend getting your certification. Fees for certification may be different, depending on which state you took it. The amount of fees may also vary depending on the classes they are taking and if they are new applicants. Each training course may also be different from each other, so make sure that you are taking the right class for your certification training.

Like all jobs, driving a forklift must also have safety measures. That is why OSHA Forklift Safety Training is needed by every operator of this equipment. For the last 20 years, forklift related deaths have been a major cause of industrial accidents and deaths. 10 out of 1000 of injuries that occur each year comes from forklift accidents. Keep in mind that safety is always a priority when it comes to driving a forklift. The driver must also be aware if he needs a break, take note that some accidents happen simply because the forklift operator is too tired to function well. All of these things must be considered before anything else.
  • Good reflexes – when driving a forklift, the driver and the machine itself should work as one. It is all about hand-eye coordination. A quick response by the driver is also needed in order to solve any potential problem. This alone can help the driver avoid the risks of accidents.
  • Maintenance of your forklift machine – as a forklift operator it is your responsibility to follow the OSHA safety checklist. Make sure that your machine has safety breaks, good steering, lights and all its other parts are working properly. This must be well maintained and drivers must know if there is something wrong. Keep in mind that it is your duty to explain what malfunctions you are experiencing so that your mechanics will have the idea on what is needed to be fixed. This way, you are assured that your machine is working well and is not a risk of danger to other people in your work place.
